The Haiku Film Project

The Haiku FIlm Project was created by JAS in September of 2010. It is a mixing of two elements; film and haiku. Two sets of rules related to the haiku films allow for two different versions of the same project.

VERSION 1 (MINIMALIST) || VERSION 2 (INTRICATE)

Rules: Version 2 (Intricate)

This version of Haiku FIlms are a little more intricate due to the large number of short edits.
Version 2 Rules:

  • 1. The film must be comprised of three scenes (a single location per act).
  • 2. The first shot must be 5 seconds long just like the 5 syllables in the first sentence of a haiku.
    • a. There must be 5 shots in each scene.
    • b. Each shot must last exactly one second long (think one shot per syllable).
  • 3. The second shot must be 7 seconds long just like the 7 syllables of the second sentence of a haiku.
    • a. There must be 7 shots in each scene.
    • b. Each shot must last exactly one second long (think one shot per syllable).
  • 4. The third and final shot must be 5 seconds long just like the 5 syllables of the final sentence in a Haiku.
    • a. There must be 5 shots in each scene.
    • b. Each shot must last exactly one second long (think one shot per syllable).
  • 5. Words are not mandatory. If you feel you want the photography of a shot to be the poetry, excellent.
    • a. If you wish to include text it must follow the rules of haiku per scene, but in this variation of the rules you are free to explore how to display that text.
  • 6. Music and/or sounds are optional. However, keep in mind that people like sounds and they may enhance the meaning of the shot.
  • 7. MOST IMPORTANT Enjoy what you are doing. You are creating art. :)
These rules are what define the project, but if you feel that a small exception should be made for a good reason then do so and list the exception and reason in the submitted video’s description.
